As we settle into what we hope will be a gentle rhythm of creative exploration at The Everyday School of Art, we’d like to share with you our plans for starting points, for you and us.
The time before, is a time of anticipation, so let’s savour that and take the time to do the ground work, so that when we arrive at that moment of doing, where we cross the threshold from thinking “shall I?” to “I am,” we are in the best possible place.
Our two P’s: Preparedness and Purpose will help us establish a creative connection with ourselves, and the wider community:
Preparedness
Over the coming weeks we’ll explore how we can be prepared, through practical and philosphical means, to begin an exploration of our own creativity. Remember to take your time and enjoy the pause. Coming up, to help us prepare:
Sketchbooks: Why we need them, how to enjoy them
Time: How might we bend creative time to make it fit into our lives
Space: Claiming space
Entitlement: Helping ensure we feel we have the right to explore our own creativity
Being comfortable existing in a space of not knowing: In life, uncertainty can often lead to feelings of anxiety, but if we can learn to feel ok, or even enjoy, being in a space where we do not know, then we can really begin to explore and discover.
Purpose
We need to identify our creative “why”, so that in those moments of doubt when meandering through the spaces of not knowing, you can remind yourself why you are there and what success might look like. This is a big topic, and the why will look very different for lots of people, so we’ll be returning again and again to this one.
